    Prof. Dr. Alexandros Ntovas

Associate Professor in Maritime Law at Southampton Law School

Dr Alexandros X.M. Ntovas is an expert advocate and tenured academic in the areas of international law of the sea and admiralty (with a focus on public ‘wet’ maritime law), navigational freedoms and practice, as well as in all issues regarding contemporary safety and security of ships, ports, and offshore installations.  Currently an Associate Professor in Maritime Law at Southampton Law School, he is going to assume the Directorship of the Institute of Maritime Law in 2020. He was formerly a director of international shipping law programs at the University of London, Queen Mary College, Centre for Commercial Law Studies and a visiting professor in transnational oceans and maritime law at the King’s College London. He has been promoted to a readership in acquiring the position of the Professor (Associate) with effect from September 2019 at the University of Southampton Law School, and becoming in 2020 the Director of the prestigious and internationally leading Institute of Maritime Law, to which he had previously (2012–16) served as a governing board member. His background amalgamates the broader legal disciplines of international and European law, at both public and private level, with political analysis and international relations, as these find a common expression in the context of maritime law, shipping practice and oceanic policy. He belongs to the new generation of maritime lawyers, who are competent to perceive, appreciate and undertake the challenging task of dealing with a ship as one single economic, social, commercial and – at times when the flag State extents diplomatic protection to her in international proceedings– sovereign entity. He has practised public and administrative law and acted on numerous occasions as a policy advisor to governments, including the European Union, the public sector and the shipping industry. He publishes internationally on the above matters (his most recent work includes The IMLI Treatise On Global Ocean Governance: UN Specialized Agencies and Global Ocean Governance (Oxford University Press: 2018), edited together with Professor Malgosia Fitzmaurice and Judge David J. Attard, IMO IMLI Director and Vice-President of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea), as well as speaking in high-profile international fora and conferences.
